What to ask before you buy a used Ingenium engine

A used complete engine can make sense at many price points. Only if the donor is the right layout, the right fuel and output, and the seller will answer boring questions in writing. Shopping the whole car instead? Use the used-car guide.

This guide is for UK owners replacing a failed Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium engine — compact SUVs, saloons and full-size Land Rovers. Diesel four, petrol four or 3.0 six: the questions below still apply. If you are buying the car with the engine still in it, start with the used Land Rover / Jaguar inspection guide.

Facelift years and mild-hybrid introductions (often from 2019–2020 depending on model) change the complete-engine package. Confirm whether your car is MHEV before you bid. Then confirm the donor is the same generation.

Stamped code, not the word Ingenium

Ingenium covers 2.0 diesel, 2.0 petrol and 3.0 sixes. Ask for the exact stamp (204DTD, 204DTA, PT204, a 3.0 code) and a photo. Catalogue family names are not enough on their own.

Donor registration

Get the plate. Run GOV.UK vehicle enquiry and MOT history. You want a mileage trail that matches the advert, the right fuel, and a model that actually used that engine. If they will not give a reg, treat the listing as incomplete.

Fuel and output

Diesel vs petrol is not optional. On diesels, D150, D180 and D240 can share a family stamp with different turbo, injectors and ECU. Confirm from the donor reg and V5C, not from a rocker-cover photo.

Mileage at removal

Ask for the miles at removal in writing. Cross-check that against the donor MOT history. Get the price including carriage in writing too.

Layout, FWD vs AWD, MHEV

Transverse compact SUVs (Discovery Sport, Evoque, E-Pace) are not the same job as longitudinal saloons and large Land Rovers. FWD vs AWD changes sump and what arrives as a “complete engine”. Mild-hybrid hardware is not a footnote. Your fitter should confirm — we will not say it will definitely fit.

Engine number

The code is the variant. The engine number is unique. It should match the donor V5C. Photograph it before you travel. If the number is painted over or missing, walk away.

Compression

Ask for figures on all cylinders, taken with a gauge, not “it turns over nicely”. Uneven numbers, or a refusal, are reasons to budget a recon instead. A used engine without compression data is a gamble, not a bargain.

Snapped injector bolts (diesels)

Ingenium diesel injector bolts are notorious for rounding or snapping on removal. If this engine came out because injectors were being changed, ask whether any bolts broke and whether the head was machined.

Collection scams

Pay on collection after you have seen the stamp, or use a card/business account with a paper invoice. Large deposits to a new personal account, “my driver is already on the way”, or a collection address that is not a yard are standard warning signs. Meet at a breaker or specialist, in daylight.

What to do with a promising engine

  1. Match stamp, engine number and donor V5C.
  2. On 2.0 diesels, budget a timing-chain kit while it is out — replacement guide and kits.
  3. Compare used vs recon vs supply-and-fit in the options guide.
  4. Add carriage, missing ancillaries and labour to the headline price. Price bands.

FAQ

Workshop pick

Schaeffler INA

559 1793 20
The aftermarket line UK trade catalogues most often put against the 2.0 diesel. Related numbers 559 1793 21 and 553 0814 10 are not automatic substitutes. Open the box: you need both chains, all guides and both tensioners — some INA lines are a short kit.
Complete aftermarket kit

Febi Bilstein

194091
The boxed kit we would order for a used 2.0 diesel going back in, if genuine is not on the shelf. It crosses to LR132676 and LR139320. Check both chains (90 and 82 links), all guides and both tensioners before you pay.
Single-turbo 150/180 hp

Genuine JLR (latest revision)

LR140581
The turbo we would order for a single-turbo 2.0 diesel. Current Land Rover number; supersedes LR094424, LR083483 and LR073722. Confirm the stamp on the old housing and the VIN. Not a 204DTA twin-turbo.

Kits we would actually order for a 2.0 diesel: Schaeffler INA 559 1793 20 or Febi 194091 for the chain, and LR140581 for a single turbo. Confirm the box against your engine number. Affiliate disclosure — tracking IDs are still placeholders.
