Replace the Ingenium 2.0 diesel timing chain
The chain sits at the rear of the engine. Do it on the stand when you fit a used unit. In the car, the gearbox has to come out. This is a workshop sequence, not a guarantee you should DIY it.
This guide is for the Ingenium 2.0 diesel four — stamps such as 204DTD, 204DTA, 204DTH and 204DTF — in Land Rover and Jaguar cars. Petrol fours and the 3.0 six are a different kit and a different procedure. Confirm the stamped code and engine number before you order parts.
Independent specialists see cold-start rattle and chain stretch most often on earlier (roughly 2015–2018) diesels, especially with short-trip oil dilution. Later tensioners were revised. The labour is the same either way: gearbox-side access.

If you are already swapping a used 2.0 diesel, replace the chains, guides and tensioners before the engine goes in. You already have gearbox-side access. The kit is small money next to a second failure. Clean the oil pickup while you are there.
Engine still in the car
Same parts, much more labour. Support the engine, remove the gearbox (and usually the clutch or torque converter / flexplate), then the rear timing cover. Specialists quote this as a long day or two. If the chain has already jumped or snapped, a used or recon engine may be cheaper than a chain kit plus bent valves.

What a complete kit must include
- Primary (lower) chain and secondary (upper) chain.
- Every plastic or composite guide / rail that the old ones came off as.
- Both hydraulic tensioners — not chain-only bags.
- Rear cover gasket or sealant as specified, plus new stretch bolts where the data says single-use.
- Oil pickup strainer / pipe if guides have shed debris. Fresh oil and filter to JLR spec (many 2.0 diesels: STJLR.03.5007 0W-30).

Kit recommendations
Match the kit to the engine number, not to the word Ingenium. Unbranded “chain only” listings that skip tensioners are not a recommendation. What we would buy, in order:
- Genuine JLR, latest revision — conservative choice for a car you will keep. Order the current LR132676 / LR139320 chains with the matching guides and tensioners. Later S2 (and subsequent) revisions exist; do not assume an old boxed genuine part is the updated one.
- Schaeffler INA 559 1793 20 — the aftermarket kit UK trade catalogues most often put against this diesel. Related numbers (559 1793 21, 553 0814 10) are not automatic substitutes. Confirm both chains are in the box — some INA lines are a short kit.
- Febi Bilstein 194091 — a complete kit factors stock for 204DTD / 204DTA. Open the box: both chains, all guides, both tensioners. If any of those are missing, send it back.
Skip petrol PT204 kits and anything titled only “Jaguar 2.0 timing chain” without a diesel stamp. Twin-turbo 204DTA uses the same family of chains as 204DTD — still confirm the catalogue line, because covers and ancillaries can differ.
Tools
- Ingenium 2.0 diesel cam and crank locking / pinning kit. Do not time this engine by eye.
- Engine support or a stand. Gearbox jack if the box is coming out in the car.
- Torque wrench that can do torque-plus-angle. Many cover and tensioner bolts are single-use.
- Borescope, if you are diagnosing rattle before you strip it.
- Workshop data for your engine number: torque, sealant, oil grade, stretch-bolt list.
Replacement sequence — engine on the stand
This is the job to do when a used complete engine is on the floor.
- Photograph the loom, sensors and any remaining ancillaries. Drain residual oil.
- Remove the flywheel or flexplate so the rear timing cover is clear.
- Turn the engine to the timed position in the workshop data. Fit the crank and cam locking pins. Do not release the pins until the new chains and tensioners are on.
- Remove the rear timing cover. Catch debris. Do not drop plastic into the sump.
- Relieve and remove both tensioners, then the guides, then both chains. Keep the old set together so you can compare link counts and wear.
- Inspect crank and cam sprockets. Replace them if hooked or scored. Do not reuse a damaged sprocket with a new chain.
- Drop the sump enough to lift out the oil pickup strainer. If the old guides shed plastic, clean the pickup and galleries or the new chain will starve.
- Fit new guides, chains and tensioners in the order the data specifies. Oil the tensioners as instructed. New stretch bolts only.
- Torque to the data (often torque plus angle). Remove the pins. Turn the engine by hand at least two full revolutions. It must turn freely, with the pins able to refit at TDC. If it binds, stop — valves may be meeting pistons.
- Refit the cover with the specified gasket or sealant. Refit the flexplate or flywheel with new bolts. Fill with the correct oil and a new filter once the engine is in the car.
Extra steps — engine in the car
- Scan for P0016 / P0341 and listen for rear-end cold-start rattle. Confirm it is chain, not a pulley or dual-mass.
- Disconnect the battery. Support the engine from above. Drain oil (and coolant if covers or pipes require it).
- Remove the gearbox. On automatics, the torque converter stays with the box; on manuals, the clutch comes off with it. You need the back of the block, not a half-drop.
- Follow the stand sequence from the locking pins onwards.
- Refit the gearbox, set fluid where the transmission data requires it, clear codes, and road test. Change the oil again after a short run if the pickup was full of plastic.
After the kit is in
- Shorter oil intervals (around 10,000 miles or annually) with the specified 0W-30. Long intervals plus DPF dilution are how these chains stretch.
- Do not ignore a return of cold-start rattle. That is the same failure starting again.
- If this kit went on a used engine, keep the invoice with the donor engine number.
