Ingenium engines sit in compact SUVs, Jaguar saloons and full-size Land Rovers from 2015. Plenty of them are honest used cars. The failures that send people to this site — stretched timing chains, starved turbos, diluted oil — usually leave clues on a viewing if you insist on a cold engine and a dipstick.
If the engine has already failed and you are shopping for a replacement unit, use the used-engine buyer’s guide instead. Use both if you are buying a non-runner as a project.
Confirm it is actually Ingenium
The badge on the back does not settle it. Run the registration on the GOV.UK vehicle enquiry and read fuel plus engine capacity.
- Ingenium fours are about 1,997–1,999 cc, diesel or petrol, from 2015.
- A 2,179 cc diesel on an early Range Rover Evoque (L538) or Discovery Sport is the older Ford 2.2 — a different engine, different parts, different used-car checks.
- Diesel vs petrol vs later 3.0 six is not optional. Mild-hybrid (MHEV, often from around 2020 depending on model) adds a 48V belt starter. The listing should say so; the under-bonnet hardware should match.
Which layout you are buying — transverse compact SUV versus longitudinal saloon or large Land Rover — is in the fitment table. You are buying a car here, not swapping a long-block, but the same split explains gearboxes, four-wheel drive and where the timing chain lives.
2.0 diesel
The high-stakes used buy. Chain rattle, oil dilution, DPF/EGR, injectors and turbo oiling. Prefer evidence of regular oil changes (often STJLR.03.5007 0W-30 — confirm in the handbook) and motorway use. Earlier 2015–2018 cars need the most caution, not a boycott.
2.0 petrol
Different fault list: oil use, turbo and ignition are what independent workshops mention. It is not “the diesel without a DPF”. Still confirm service history, cold-start behaviour and that nobody is selling a petrol as a diesel or the reverse.
3.0 six
Diesel and petrol straight-sixes in Defender, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and later Discovery. Generally discussed as a stronger design than the early 2.0 diesel — still check AdBlue (diesel), MHEV hardware, service invoices and the exact code. Budget is a different market.
Paperwork before you travel
Do this from the sofa. If the seller will not give a registration, there is nothing to check.
GOV.UK vehicle enquiry
Fuel, engine capacity, CO2, first registration, tax. A 2,179 cc diesel on an early Evoque or Discovery Sport is the Ford 2.2, not Ingenium. Ingenium fours are about 1,997–1,999 cc.
MOT history
Look for emissions fails, oil leaks, engine MIL, “particulate filter”, under-body corrosion and mileage that jumps. Repeated advisory oil leaks on a 2.0 diesel are a story, not a footnote.
HPI / finance / write-off
Run a proper data check (HPI, Experian AutoCheck or equivalent) for finance, stolen, plate change and Cat S/N (or older C/D) markers. A cheap write-off with a rattling diesel is two problems stacked.
V5C and keepers
The logbook should be in the seller’s name. Photograph the VIN on the plate, the screen surround and the engine number. A private seller who “hasn’t got the V5 yet” is not a viewing, it is a pause.
Service invoices
Stamps without invoices are weak on these engines. You want oil spec, interval and who did the work. JLR main dealer or a known independent is better than a stack of 20,000-mile “full services” at a non-specialist.
Recalls and campaigns
Ask the seller to check outstanding recalls against the VIN with a dealer. Do not assume a clean MOT means campaigns are done.
Service history that actually matters
Short-trip UK use is hard on the 2.0 diesel. Incomplete DPF regenerations dump fuel into the sump. Thin, fuel-smelling oil is unkind to a rear-mounted timing chain and to the turbo. That cascade is the pattern in common faults — not every car, and not a claim about the one you are viewing.
- Oil and filter receipts that name a JLR spec. Many 2.0 diesels want STJLR.03.5007 (often 0W-30). The handbook for that VIN wins.
- Intervals closer to 6,000–10,000 miles on a school-run diesel beat 16,000-mile “long life” stamps.
- Timing-chain, turbo, injector or DPF invoices with part numbers. A verbal “the chain was done” is not a chain job.
- Evidence the car sees an A-road or motorway, not only two-mile trips.
What to look for on the viewing
Order matters. Listen from cold, then read the oil, then drive. Warming the engine first hides the expensive noises.
Hear it from cold
Arrive with the engine overnight-cold. A metallic rattle for a few seconds on a 2.0 diesel is the classic timing-chain warning. If the seller has already warmed it “so it is nice for you”, come back. A rattle that continues at idle is a walk-away.
Read the dipstick
Over-full oil that smells of diesel is fuel dilution from incomplete DPF regenerations — it wrecks chains and turbos. Milky oil or mayonnaise under the filler cap is coolant. Metallic glitter is bearings or chain debris. All three are reasons to leave.
Watch the first start
Blue or grey smoke can be turbo oil. White that does not clear can be coolant. Black under load can be injectors or DPF. Any engine, DPF, glow-plug, battery/MHEV or air-suspension lamp that stays on after start is a documented defect, not a “sensor”.
Turbo and pipes
Feel charge pipes for oil. A damp film is common; a wet intercooler or oil dripping from the compressor is not. Listen for a siren or grind on boost. Shaft play is hard to judge in situ — smoke plus oil plus whistle is enough.
Drive it properly
Include a dual carriageway. You want clean boost, no limp mode, no DPF warning, and a gearbox that does not slam at low speed. On overrun, heavy smoke is a bad sign. After the drive, re-check the dipstick — it should not have risen.
Match the engine number
Photograph the stamped code and the unique engine number. They should agree with the V5C. A freshly painted block with no readable number is not a mystery, it is a no.
Layout and model traps — not one hero car
Compare by how the engine sits and what is bolted to it, not by treating one compact SUV as the default.
Transverse compact SUVs
Discovery Sport, Evoque and E-Pace sit the engine east–west, often with a 9-speed auto. FWD vs AWD changes the rear coupling. Mismatched tyre sizes on AWD will destroy that coupling. Early Evoque L538 and some Discovery Sport cars were still Ford 2.2 — confirm capacity.
Longitudinal saloons and coupés
XE, XF and related Jaguars sit the engine north–south, usually with a ZF 8-speed. Same 2.0 family name as a compact SUV, different bay. Inspect for oil leaks at the rear of the engine (chain cover / gearbox join) and for a clean MOT emissions history.
Longitudinal SUVs
F-Pace, Velar, Discovery 5, Defender, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover. Many have air suspension — listen for the compressor after you change height, and look for sag overnight. 2.0 vs 3.0 is not a trim option; it is a different engine.
