D150 vs D180: how to tell from a donor registration

Many 2.0 diesel stamps cover both 150 hp and 180 hp. How to read a UK donor reg, V5C and MOT history so you do not buy the wrong tune.

Both tunes commonly use 204DTD. 150 hp = D150 / eD4 = 110 kW, about 380 Nm. 180 hp = D180 / TD4 = 132 kW, about 430 Nm. The stamp will not settle it.

Use the donor registration on the GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service. You get engine size (should be 1998/1999 cc class), fuel, and year. Then check MOT history for a mileage trail. Cross-check the original UK brochure output for that model year: eD4/D150 vs TD4/D180. Ask the seller for a V5C photo showing the engine number.

Commercial VIN decoders can show factory kilowatts. Treat them as a clue, not a certificate. If the seller cannot say whether the donor was 110 kW or 132 kW, you do not have enough to buy a “complete” engine for a specific output. Turbo, injectors and ECU are the difference.

Workshop pick

Schaeffler INA

559 1793 20
The aftermarket line UK trade catalogues most often put against the 2.0 diesel. Related numbers 559 1793 21 and 553 0814 10 are not automatic substitutes. Open the box: you need both chains, all guides and both tensioners — some INA lines are a short kit.
Complete aftermarket kit

Febi Bilstein

194091
The boxed kit we would order for a used 2.0 diesel going back in, if genuine is not on the shelf. It crosses to LR132676 and LR139320. Check both chains (90 and 82 links), all guides and both tensioners before you pay.
Single-turbo 150/180 hp

Genuine JLR (latest revision)

LR140581
The turbo we would order for a single-turbo 2.0 diesel. Current Land Rover number; supersedes LR094424, LR083483 and LR073722. Confirm the stamp on the old housing and the VIN. Not a 204DTA twin-turbo.

Kits we would actually order for a 2.0 diesel: Schaeffler INA 559 1793 20 or Febi 194091 for the chain, and LR140581 for a single turbo. Confirm the box against your engine number. Affiliate disclosure — tracking IDs are still placeholders.
